A modest proposal for a better living.

Consumers don’t “Demand Cheap, Abundant Energy”. What we want is to enjoy the benefits of modern living at the same price of lower as we do today.

One way to keep doing this could be to drastically change the electrical specs of everything.
_all_ of the consumer electronics today can (and do) run on 1/10 the energy available at the outlet. Drop the transformers (wall warts), change the outlets and provide 12vdc form the public mains. Small change from the street transformer to the household.

The same for electrical cars, etc. Save for powerful machines (big motors, some of the household appliances like dryers, etc) I believe that almost everything else (domestic, I mean) could change it’s electrical specs and use a drastically lower amount of energy today.

And keep all the current power plants everything exactly the way they are (that is, stop the growth) for the big powerful consumers; you could grow your economy tenfold without increasing the carbon footprint  this way. No new taxes, nothing.

Then you could phase out your coal plants for something cleaner, but thinking mostly only on the really big, industrial energy consumers. Again, no new taxes, no new subsidies.
